Fire safety & evacuation for Rancho San Pasqual & Vistamonte
Our hills are beautiful and they burn. Every valley household should know its evacuation zone, have alerts set up, and keep a go-plan. Start here — it takes ten minutes.

🚨 In an active emergency
Call 911 for immediate danger. For evacuation status, check Genasys Protect (the county's official zone system) and AlertSanDiego. Do not wait for a knock on the door — if you feel unsafe, leave early. The valley has limited exit routes (ours are listed below).Three things to do before fire season peaks
1. Know your zone
San Diego County evacuates by Genasys Protect zones. Look up your address, write your zone name on the fridge, and check it during any incident — warnings and orders are issued zone by zone.
2. Register for AlertSanDiego
Cell phones aren't automatically registered to your home address. Sign up every phone in the household so evacuation notifications reach you wherever you are.
3. Make a go-plan
Go-bags, documents, pets, and a family meeting point. The county's Ready San Diego guide walks you through it — and don't forget large-animal plans if you keep horses in the valley.
Rancho San Pasqual & Vistamonte: zone SDC-0880
Both gated communities are in the same Genasys Protect zone, SDC-0880. If a warning or order names SDC-0880, it covers both. See zone SDC-0880 on Genasys Protect
Fire hazard severity: on the City of Escondido's map, all 80 Vistamonte homes and 532 of Rancho San Pasqual's 580 are in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone; the other 48 Rancho San Pasqual homes are mapped High. Sellers in both zones must disclose it, and new construction must meet ignition-resistant standards (city fire severity page). Neighborhood details: Rancho San Pasqual · Vistamonte.
🚗 Rancho San Pasqual: ways out
Both gates are on Old Ranch Rd, and both routes reach SR-78 by Cloverdale Rd.
South gate: to the all-way stop at Rockwood Rd, west on Rockwood to Cloverdale Rd, then south to the signal at San Pasqual Valley Rd (SR-78). About 2 miles.
Northwest gate: straight onto Cloverdale Rd, then south to the same SR-78 signal. About 2 miles.
There's no direct road to Bear Valley Pkwy; it's reached by SR-78 west.
🚗 Ranchos at Vistamonte: ways out
Both gates, north (Vistamonte Glen) and west (Morning Terrace Glen): onto Rockwood Rd (from the north gate by way of Vistamonte Ave), north to the Old Ranch Rd stop, west to Cloverdale Rd, then south to SR-78. About 2 miles.
Old Battlefield Rd: a private road runs south to West Zoo Rd, which meets SR-78 about a mile away. It isn't one of the two community gates; before you count on this route, ask the HOA whether residents can use it in an evacuation.
Watch the neighboring zones too
The roads out pass through other zones, so an order there can affect your route before SDC-0880 is named. Cloverdale Rd is the line between SDC-0880 and zones SDC-0806, SDC-0879 and SDC-0878 to the west. The Cloverdale Rd signal on SR-78 sits where SDC-0878, SDC-0880, SDC-0938 and SDC-0939 meet. SR-78 at West Zoo Rd is in SDC-0939, and Old Battlefield Rd and West Zoo Rd are in SDC-0940. 🚧 Roads & closures
Caltrans SR-78 projects — multi-year freeway rehab from I-5 in Oceanside to Broadway in Escondido, running through 2027 with some overnight ramp and lane closures. No current project covers the valley stretch of 78.

Defensible space: what the law requires
Homes on the rim back up to wildland. California law (Public Resources Code 4291) requires defensible space up to 100 feet from your home, or to your property line if that is closer. Insurers may inspect for it, so keep records of your clearance work.
- Zone 0 (0–5 ft): nothing combustible against the house — no mulch, no junipers, no stacked wood.
- Zone 1 (5–30 ft): lean, clean, and green; trim trees 10 ft from the roof.
- Zone 2 (30–100 ft): reduce fuel, mow, and space plantings.
- Harden the house: ember-resistant vents, clean gutters, Class A roof.
