Kids Free October — each October, kids 11 & under get in free with a ticketed adult (up to 6 kids per adult).
Autumn Festival — select fall weekends, included with admission.
Wild Holidays — late November through early January, evenings with holiday entertainment.

Beyond the main gate
Balloon Safari — the tethered balloon rises ~400 ft over our valley (10–12 min, weather-dependent; price varies by day).

Mkutano House & The Watering Hole
Mkutano House is a full-service restaurant overlooking Elephant Valley — it takes reservations on OpenTable. The Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook is the open-air bar above the African Plains (walk-up only since early 2026; a 2025 OpenTable Diners' Choice pick for ambiance). Park admission required for both.
Go often for less
General parking is $20 per visit, and every adult member now parks free. San Diego Resident memberships come in two tiers: Resident Limited ($99/adult) covers the Safari Park and the Zoo on weekdays only — not weekends or holiday periods — and Resident Premium ($144/adult) covers both parks year-round with no blockout dates. Check the event calendar before weekends: park traffic on San Pasqual Valley Rd is real.

🥾 Trails, lakes & open space
Coast to Crest Trail
The San Dieguito River Park's signature trail runs the length of our valley — past Sikes Adobe, Lake Hodges, and Mule Hill, where interpretive signs tell the story of the 1846 siege. Connects to Raptor Ridge and the Old Coach Trail.
Clevenger Canyon & the Ag Preserve Trail
Clevenger Canyon's north and south trailheads off Highway 78 climb to big views over the whole valley. Prefer flat? The newer San Pasqual Valley Agricultural Preserve Trail is an easy walk through working farmland.
Lakes: Hodges & Dixon
Lake Hodges — fishing & boating Wed, Sat & Sun, sunrise to sunset, February through October only (closed November–January, and closed the 3rd Wednesday of each month). Dixon Lake — open daily 6am–dusk (closed Christmas Day) with stocked trout, boat rentals & camping. Daley Ranch — free trails daily for hiking, biking & horses.

🎡 History, horses & happenings
⚔️ San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park
The site of the 1846 Battle of San Pasqual — the bloodiest battle of the Mexican-American War in California — honoring both the Kumeyaay people and the soldiers who fought here. The park's visitor center and parking lots are closed: State Parks cites ongoing renovations, and the volunteer association dates the closure to 2020. To reach the trails, park at the San Diego Archaeological Center inside the park at 16666 San Pasqual Valley Rd (museum open Wed–Sat 10am–4pm). The volunteer association said it would not hold Battle Day in 2025; check spbva.org and State Parks for any special events.
🐴 The Ranch at Bandy Canyon
Guided one-hour trail rides through the hills from ~$45 (wine-and-cheese ride options too), riding lessons from age 6, and a 144-acre historic ranch venue — ten minutes from the neighborhoods at 16251 Bandy Canyon Rd.
🍅 Markets & Cruisin' Grand
Escondido Certified Farmers' Market — every Tuesday 2:30pm to sundown downtown, on Juniper St between Grand Ave and Valley Pkwy at Heritage Garden Park. Cruisin' Grand — pre-1974 classics fill Grand Avenue every Friday evening (4–9pm), June through September, free. (Note: the old Sikes Adobe Sunday market is no longer running.)
🎨 Queen Califia & the arts
Queen Califia's Magical Circle — Niki de Saint Phalle's mosaic sculpture garden in Kit Carson Park; free, open Tue & Thu 9am–noon and 2nd/4th Saturdays 9am–2pm (weather permitting). The California Center for the Arts downtown carries concerts, theater & museum exhibits year-round.
